Flood Alert: FG Urges Nigerians To Prepare As Jebba Dam Spills Excess Water

The Federal Government has issued a new flood alert to Nigerians due to water release from Jebba Dam.

In a recent statement, Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, announced that Jebba Dam is currently releasing excess water, managed under regulations set by Kainji Dam operators, who had maintained a 53cm buffer to adapt to varying inflows.

NIHSA, through Director of Operational Hydrology, Pastor Femi Bejide, has been working closely with the operators of both Kainji and Jebba Dams to manage reservoir levels effectively.

NIHSA through the Director Operational Hydrology Pastor Femi Bejide, is working in close contact with the operators of Kainji and Jebba Dams on the management of the reservoirs.

“The rain is gradually shifting to the south, however, there is still some amount of water coming into Nigeria as monitored from our station at Jidere Bode and Kende
,” Mohammed emphasised.

He highlighted NIHSA’s strong cooperation with national and international authorities overseeing these dams, stressing the agency’s dedication to managing river flood events to support Nigeria’s socio-economic stability.

Mohammed noted that water levels in the River Niger Basin have slowly declined since early October.

However, he urged Nigerians to continue adhering to flood preparedness measures, reaffirming NIHSA’s commitment to effective flood management across the country.

This alert follows reports of severe flooding across Nigeria, with Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, among the most impacted areas.
